Where Did I find this Information?
One day I happened upon a book-”The Revolution of Horsemanship and What It Means to Mankind”-by Robert Miller and Hugh Downs.
Thumbing through this fascinating book, I came across a chapter on old horse trainers. Masters of the 19th century like Jesse Beery and Professor Sydney Galvane. It was then that I learned of the authoritative horse trainer Mathew Horace Hayes (1842-1904), a Captain in the British Army who trained military horses all over the empire-in England, Ireland, South Africa, and even India.
Hayes knowledge was extensive. Miller and Downs write:
“Captain Matthew Horace Hayes-one of the 19th centuries most important horsemen”
And we learn that:
“Captain Hayes was a world traveler and twice had the opportunity to test his abilities on a more exotic equine-the Zebra. …it was considered the ultimate test of skill.
On both occasions in less than an hour, the Zebra was calmly carrying a rider.”
I was intrigued. If this man could make a Zebra-a wild animal-carry a rider calmly in less than an hour, imagine what his methods could do with horses! I then learned that Captain Hayes had written several books on horsemanship. But where to find them, he had been deceased for more than a hundred years?
It was then, after months of searching, I was lucky enough to come across an old yellowed-copy in the library. I devoured the book, amazed at the insights that filled the pages.
Insights that could only be known to a military horseman- A Calvary Horseman- a breed of man that no longer exists.
These were vital horse training secrets that would only be known to people who lived with and depended on horses for their very survival.
